About French

French is the official language of France and its overseas territories. The French language is also spoken in more than 50 other countries and is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

French Learning Tips

  • You’ll notice that many French words have accent marks, which help you properly pronounce words. Sometimes an accent distinguishes one word from another that is identical except for the mark.
  • There are two categories of French nouns: masculine and feminine.
  • You may notice that some letters are rarely pronounced at the end of a word. For example the ending -e, -es, or -ent in these words: la fille mange; les filles mangent. Rosetta Stone language learning software helps you learn the exceptions to this rule through guided exposure and practice.
  • Depending on how they’re categorized, French adjectives appear before or after nouns in the word order.
  • French has both formal and informal ways to address others, depending on the age of the speaker and her relationship to the person being addressed.
